Is a Trading Mentor Worth It for Beginners?

If you have never placed a trade, paying someone to teach you can feel like a big step. You can learn a lot for free online, so why pay?
The honest answer is that a mentor is worth it when it saves you more than it costs. For most beginners, that is easier than it sounds.
What beginners usually get wrong on their own
- Too many strategies. A new one every week from YouTube, never long enough to learn any of them.
- Too many indicators. A chart covered in lines and still no clear answer.
- No risk plan. Trading too big, then losing a month of progress in one afternoon.
- Failed prop evaluations. Each reset fee adds up quickly.
A mentor's job is to stop those mistakes before they cost you. Just make sure you check for the red flags first.
When a mentor is worth it
- You want to trade seriously, not as a lottery ticket
- You are willing to follow rules, even when they feel slow
- You would rather learn one market properly than dabble in ten
- You want feedback on your own trades, not just general advice
When it is not worth it
- You want guaranteed income
- You are not prepared to practise on a simulator first
- You are trading money you cannot afford to lose
If any of those apply, wait. The markets will still be there.
What your first few months should look like
In the Wave Rider Mentorship, beginners follow four stages:
- Week 1: setup. TradingView, the Wave Rider indicator and alerts on your phone.
- Weeks 1 to 3: the playbook. Entries, stops, three take profit levels, and when not to trade.
- Weeks 3 to 6: practice. Replay and simulator sessions, reviewed in the group.
- When you are ready: get funded. A written risk plan for your prop firm, then your evaluation.
One of our founding members put it simply: he did not have a clue about trading, followed the instructions, and passed his evaluations. His results are his own and not typical, but it shows what a structured start can do.
The bottom line
A mentor will not trade for you. A good one gives you a system, a plan and someone to ask, which is exactly what most beginners are missing.
Trading futures carries a substantial risk of loss. Individual results vary. Education only, not financial advice.
